Welder demonstrates the cutting torch he uses to cut steel beams driven into the ground beneath Alum Creek at the beginning of construction for the new bridge. The beams were used as part of the temporary structure used to hold platforms for workers to build the bridge. The welder cuts the beams off at the bottom of Alum Creek.

Westerville Road rebuild uncovers paving brick sublayer

Paving bricks under Westerville Road 2011-8-3-00176

Construction to rebuild the intersection of Westerville Road and Dempsey Road exposed six-inch heavy paving bricks beneath nearly 10 inches of asphalt. The nearly perfect bricks, none of which were marked for their origins, weren’t a surprise to the construction workers who often see  new road surfaces covering older brick roadways.

The bricks span the width of the road and appear to cover about a 200-foot length of the road from just north of the intersection to  in front of  Glengary Shopping Center.

The removed bricks, along with the concrete underlayer,  are hauled to a nearby recycling facility where they will be crushed.
